Nothing manmade can be better than your own God-given teeth.
This is why we always try and save your tooth is possible and will only advise it to be removed if completely necessary. What determines whether a tooth is saveable or not, is the amount of tooth structure there is above the gum line to restore successfully, the amount of bone supporting the tooth in the jaw and whether or not there is infection present.
Whenever we think about removing a tooth, there are some alternative forms of tooth replacement that we go through in order to give you a method of filling the gap afterwards. This will be usually be discussed with you in advance.
After a tooth is removed, we would normally advise a period to 3-6 months of healing prior to replacement of the tooth. In some instances a tooth can be replaced immediately.
So, what does an extraction involve?
At your visit, the tooth that is to be removed will be pinpointed to you and your tooth x-ray will be discussed with you too. Once you are ready to proceed, some local anaesthetic will be given to numb the tooth very well. So, we can say with confidence, you will not feel any pain when the tooth is removed. We will not proceed if you are in pain and also will certainly always give you with enough anaesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Gentle pressure will be placed onto the tooth and the tooth will be wiggled out.
Please note, the advice outlined below is not a substitute to seeing a dentist and will not provide you with a long term solution, so please make an appointment to see one of the team if you have not already done so.
